These books are like a cross between the original Star Trek and Star Trek Voyager. The protagonists include an intrepid captain, a smart alec Russian (not Scottish) engineer, a security chief and a doctor. In the first three installments, the ship was swept far from home by some sort of wormhole-like glitch and the crew finds itself pitted against an evil empire. The plots, up to this point, are pretty formulaic and the action is like a TV series. Even with that criticism, I'll admit the first four installments have been entertaining and I will read at least a few more because I like space opera. In that sense, I recommend it.
Don't expect much originality and it's not great literature. But, if you're looking for popcorn, you won't be too disappointed.
If you're new to space opera, I'd recommend a look at David Weber's series starring Honor Harrington or the original Timothy Zahn trilogy set in the Star Wars universe. There's tons of it out there.

Ep#4 "Freedom Dawn The Frontiers Saga eBook Ryk Brown Reviews
Best of the books so far because it features what Mr. Brown does best, 1. story telling/plot 2, action! action! action! 3. good writer 4. military/scientific aspects are close enough to be believable. What Mr. Brown struggles with, is dialogue/conversation/drama and there was far less of that in this book.
But, its obvious, by the reviewers, that a lot of people prefer drama and conversation over action and there are plenty of mil sci fi writers who are mostly drama and conversation. Can't please everyone. Some were bothered by the high body count, but in combat, in reality, it happens. AND, this is only a sci fi book, these people do not really exist, they did not really die. I appreciate the fact that some who die are individuals that the author has developed to at least some level. Again...it happens.
I am still perplexed about Mr. Brown's personal military experience as he gets a lot of it right...but some not. It's, 'p r e s e n t...ARMS!', to bring everyone to a salute, not, 'SALUTE'. Not perfect, but close enough.
It became pretty clear that the aurora wasn't going home this episode. She tries to hide in the meteor belt of Corinair, but due to Jalea's treachery she is discovered, and has to fight it out with a tamarind capitol ship. Due to some creative use of the jump drive, she survives, barely. We're not through though. There's more treachery, and Nathan has to convince the people of Corinair that he isn't a bad guy. To do this, he must accept that he is the Na Tan of legend. So, anyway, I'm glad the other episodes have been completed because I'd have hated to wait for the next episode to come out after this cliff hanger.
Two main complaints
1) The main characters of the first three books and even the beginning of this book pretty much sit out the story. The characters a reader wants to read about play only small roles in the story.
2) The main characters are flat. In the first book we see some character development but throughout the rest of the book they pretty much remain the same. They have not grown since half way through the first book despite all their trials. The captain, for instance, is still indecisive, a bit whiny and seemingly incredibly lucky. It is a fine transition place but not enough to sustain 4 books. I wanted to care about them but for the most part they began to feel like two dimensional characters.
I can understand how some readers may enjoy this book a lot. Personally, I found the action sequences to be well thought out and written (I am not one to care much about editing errors). If you read for the action and have less interest in character development then I can imagine you would like this book a great deal. The characters in the action were likable and most would root for them. Personally, it felt disjointed without the main characters involvement and I had a difficult time caring about the main characters who had been flat for several books.
This series (if I may use the benchmark of "space opera") is a very significant improvement on most of the trash I have been reading () of late.
Because...
There is a consistent and developing story-line that keeps me wanting to read the next installment.
There are NO typo errors of significance. Instead of crazy truncated or crunched sentences on nearly every page, I detect only the odd typo like there/their - and only one every hundred pages or so. If Mr Brown is editing his own prose, I give him top-marks for that alone.
This story (I am now nearing completion of episode 5) is a very good tale. The science steals (as it should) much from leading-edge and 'out-there' theories to develop a very credible world-view that I find both acceptable and frankly quite exciting. The Zero-Point Energy part of the on-going saga is of particular interest.
Mr. Brown appears to research his topic/s very well in order to make his story 'acceptable' to those who detest the super-hero/clunky science and downright rubbish proffered by so many other Sci-Fi authors.
To collect the above into a solid opinion, YES - The Frontiers Saga will likely keep you engaged through many hours of intrigue and scientific speculation within your own mind.
Considerable effort (well spent) developing tension between the story and the story behind the story is a device that works well in this series.
Good series. Great effort.
Enjoy.
